Detec In The NewsMoisture Detection and Monitoring System Installed in Library of Parliament as Part of Restoration Effort
Detec Systems provides advance warning of water penetration, preserving the integrity of the historical building and its contents OTTAWA - Oct. 11, 2005 - Detec Systems completed installation of its remote, 24-hour moisture detection and monitoring system in the Library of Parliament. The Canadian government decided to include the permanent system in its comprehensive restoration of the 130-year old building due in part to Detec's unique capability to identify the location of potentially damaging and costly water intrusion. "The Library of Parliament building and the collections housed within it are of vast historical significance to Canada," said Detec chief technology officer David Vokey. "As a Sidney-based company [British Columbia], Detec Systems is proud to be an integral member of the restoration team that is working to preserve these national treasures for future generations." Detec's products and services notify building operators of problem areas before moisture accumulation can generate large-scale issues such as mould growth and building damage. The company's patented moisture detection and monitoring system assigns each monitored zone within a building a digital address corresponding to building plans. This allows technicians to determine the specific location of water intrusion and thus minimize unnecessary investigative or maintenance costs. Detec Systems adapted proven technology from the telecommunications industry to the built environment. Combined with Detec's extensive knowledge of building science, the patented technology provides builders and developers with practical solutions to costly water intrusion problems. The Library of Parliament installed Detec's moisture detection and monitoring system in conjunction with the replacement of the building's three copper roofs. As part of the installation protocol, the Public Works Department conducted a 100 percent live inspection of Detec's capabilities. Test sections of the building were systematically drenched and then allowed to dry to ensure building conditions were monitored accurately. The system monitored the changing conditions effectively and provided accurate data. In addition to protecting against future damages, Detec's services have been shown to provide quality assurance of the construction process. After the moisture detection and monitoring system was initially activated at the Library of Parliament, Detec alerted the program manager of a water intrusion. Upon investigation, project managers discovered a tear in the building's temporary architectural fabric covering and repaired the problem to prevent further damage. "Construction is a complicated business in which the risks of water intrusion damages are great," warned Vokey. "Detec can provide project managers, developers and building operators with additional reassurance that their buildings are functioning properly and their assets are protected." With installation in two tiers of the roof complete, Detec will continuously monitor building conditions from a remote location. Building operators will be kept abreast of potential leaks and building conditions. Detec Systems has been contracted to install additional sensors in the third and lowest tier of the Library of Parliament roof, which is currently under construction. This project is expected to be completed by the end of the year. Brentwood Bay Lodge & Spa and the Aberdeen Senior Care Facility, both located in Victoria, BC have installed Detec's moisture monitoring technology. Detec is under contract with a number of developers throughout North America. Projects currently under construction include: Marcato, a master-planned community being created in downtown Tacoma, Wash., the a private residence in North Saanich, BC and the Southface Energy Institution in Atlanta. The ambitious Library of Parliament restoration effort began in 2002. Further details on the project and its progress are available at www.parliamenthill.gc.ca.
